History of Lalitha Mahal Palace

Dating its history back to 1921, the Lalitha Mahal Palace was built by the then Maharaja of Mysore, Krishna Raja Wodeyar IV, as a guest house for the British Viceroy. Later, it was used to accommodate the royal guests and special visitors of Maharaja.

Named after Princess Lalitha who was the daughter of Maharaja and died unfortunately in a road accident, this palace was designed by E.W. Fritchley, a British architect who took inspiration from St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. It took a whopping amount of almost 13 lakhs to complete its construction and make it look like what it is today.

After India gained independence in 1947, the palace was taken over by the Government of Mysore. After a few years in 1974, the palace was converted into a luxury hotel and was run by the Indian Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC).

In 2002, the palace was under the administration of the Government of Karnataka, and it is now run by the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC). The palace has undergone extensive renovations and upgrades, while still preserving its historic charm and elegance.

Architecture of Lalitha Mahal Palace

Presenting an excellent example of neo-classical architecture with influences from the Renaissance and Baroque styles, the Lalitha Mahal Palace is a 2-story building in which the ground floor is made of granite and the upper floor is made of brick and stucco.

It has a grand white facade with elegant pillars and a central dome that rises to a height of 50 feet. Here you can also find a large entrance hall that leads to the Durbar Hall, which is the grandest room in the palace.

The Durbar Hall has a high ceiling with a crystal chandelier, elegant furniture, and a grand staircase leading to the upper floor. Several other rooms including the Viceroy Room, the Ballroom, and the Dining Hall, each with its unique style and décor are also there within the premises.
