Established by his highness of Krishna Raja Wodeyar III in the year 1861, the Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery, formally known as Jaganmohan Palace, was initially built as a resort for the members of the royal family.

Although the royal family used to stay in Mysore Palace originally, due to some unforeseen circumstance, it got burnt in a fire and the renovation work to regain its beauty began in 1897. So, in the meantime, the foundation of the Jaganmohan Palace was laid down. Later, in 1915, it was finally converted into an art gallery.
