History and Geography of Mysore

Founded in 1399, Mysore was mostly ruled by the Hindu Wodeyar dynasty. It was a princely state from 1799 until 1950 and reached its peak in economic power under the rule of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan. Today, Mysore has emerged as a developed and urbanized region. It is also one of India’s most important centers of art and culture.

Mysore is located at the foot of Chamundi Hills, in the southern part of the Deccan Plateau. Perched at a height of 770 m, it is about 145 km from Bangalore. The city is well-connected to the major Indian cities by rail, road, and air.

1. Mysore Palace

Mysore Palace is a regal monument also known as Amba Vilas Palace. It is a historical palace and royal residence built in 1912. You can witness the eclectic mix of Indo-Saracenic, Gothic, Muslim, Rajputana, and Hindu architectural styles. 

One of the largest palaces in India, it is brightly illuminated and thronged by people from all over the world during the Dussehra festival in October.

2. Brindavan Gardens

Spread over an area of 60 acres, Brindavan Gardens is a popular botanical park. Constructed in 1932, it is situated below the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam over the Kaveri River. You can admire the musical fountains and enthralling illumination of the gardens every evening.

The well-maintained terraced garden also has boating facilities. You can take a leisurely stroll and also capture beautiful photographs of the gardens and the landscape.

3. Mysore Zoo

One of the oldest zoos in India, the Mysore Zoo, was established in 1892. You can visit the zoo for its wide-ranging flora and fauna. Wildlife enthusiasts can spot different species of birds and animals, including the Pelican, Sarus Crane, Tapir, Bear, and African Elephant. 

You must explore the zoo on a battery-operated vehicle for the best experience. The zoo regularly organizes exhibitions and events promoting wildlife conservation.

4. Chamundeshwari Temple

Chamundeshwari Temple is one of the 18 Shakti Peethas. Located on the Chamundi Hills, it was named after the fierce form of Goddess Shakti, Chamundi Devi. 

You can also see the gigantic statues of Nandi and Mahishasura. It is one of the oldest temples of Mysore. You can enjoy the mesmerizing view of the entire Mysore city from the temple.

5. Jaganmohan Palace

Constructed in 1831, Jaganmohan Palace was formerly used by the Wodeyar rulers as their main residence. Today, it is an art gallery displaying exquisite works of art. You can experience Mysore’s rich history through the display of colorful pictures and portraits. 

The palace also houses an auditorium, where cultural programs and conferences are held during the Dussehra festival. In addition, you can appreciate the traditional Hindu architecture with its intricate carvings.

6. Somnathpura Temple

Somnathpura Temple, also called the Chennakeshava Temple, is located on the banks of the Kaveri River. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, it is one of the best epitomes of Hoysala architecture. 

Constructed in 1268, the temple stands on a raised platform and houses three shrines. You will be mesmerized by the miniature sculptures, paintings, and inscriptions all over the temple.
